Karpathos Island National Airport (IATA: AOK, ICAO: LGKP) is on the small island of Karpathos, Greece. The airport first operated in 1970 with limited facilities. Today, it covers an area of more than 12,500 square meters.

The current airport facilities were constructed between 2005 and 2009. It was inaugurated in the same year.

The airport is relatively small with basic amenities. Some of the amenities one would expect from an airport may not be available in this facility.

It has a single asphalt runway and sits 20 meters above sea level at 35°25′14″N and 027°08′48″E.

History of Karpathos Island National Airport

The island was accessible only by sea for a long time. Engineers had difficulty building the airport due to logistical and geographic challenges. In the end, they chose the southern part of the island, where flat areas were used to develop the existing airport.

Construction began in the 1960s and was completed in 1970. Small planes thereafter began landing in the new terminal.

The runway was built on the flattened area of the island. A few decades later, tourism began to take root on the island.

In the last two decades, there were several marked improvements in the once silent island. Today, and especially during the summer months, several domestic and international charter flights arrive at the airport.

Today, several airlines serve the island, including Air Serbia Austrian Airlines, Condor, Eurowings, Finnair, Neos, Olympic Air, Thessaloniki, Scandinavian Airlines, Sky Express, Smartwings, and Volotea, among others.

In 2019, the passenger traffic at the facility was more than 270,000, the highest in the airport’s operation history. In 2020, the airport handled almost 50,000 passengers due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
